X-RAY SPECTROSCOPIC PROPERTIES OF A CLUSTER MERGER AT Z

ABSTRACT

The Butcher-Oemler cluster A2111 at z = 0.23 contains a considerable number of gas-rich disk-like galaxies and substantial substructures, indicating an ongoing subcluster merger. In particular, the ICM in the central region of the cluster appears filamentary and significantly cooler than in the outskirts, but shows no sharp X-ray emission peak as normally expected for a cooling flow. We intend to take advantage of ASCA to confirm and quantify the nonisothermal state of the ICM. This will help us to determine the origin and fate of the cool gas, and to assess the impact of the merger on the ICM structure and evolution and on the galaxy population of the cluster.
