AN ASCA OBSERVATION OF THE PECULIAR SEYFERT GALAXY TOL 0109-383

ABSTRACT

We propose an ASCA observation of the high-ionization Seyfert 2 galaxy Tol 0109-383. It has been well-known that the optical emission line spectrum shows evidence for high ionization implied by [FeVII] and [FeX] which is unusual among Seyfert 2s. Our new optical spectroscopy shows spatially extended, high-ionization region traced by [FeX]. The photoionization model predicts a powerful X-ray ionizing source in this galaxy, but no hard X-ray observation has ever been done. To reveal the nature of the central source, X-ray spectroscopy at absorption-free energy band (above a few keV) is essential. The spectral capability of ASCA is the best tool to probe the central nucleus in this peculiar galaxy.
