X-RAY SPECTRA OF HIGH-Z (Z>1.8) RADIO-QUIET QUASARS

ABSTRACT

It is widely recognized that a knowledge of the X-ray properties of high-z radio-quiet quasars (RQQs) would have important consequences to probe the conditions of the early Universe, to study the evolution of quasars and to assess their contribution to the XRB. Our group has started 2 years ago a large collaborative effort to obtain the X-ray spectra of a representative sample of high-z RQQs (like that available for high-z RLQs, Cappi et al. 1997). Exciting preliminary results (good quality spectra and marginal, but systematic, evidence of iron lines) have been obtained that push us to continue in this direction. Observation of three RQQs at z~2 are thus proposed to i) obtain reliable measures of their X-ray slope and absorption and ii) confirm the evidence of strong iron emission.
