TIME-RESOLVED SPECROSCOPY OF EI ERI: CORONAL STRUCTURE AND FLARES

ABSTRACT

We request ASCA observations of the single-lined active binary EI Eri (G5 IV + ; orbital period 1.95 days) that would be simultaneous with a scheduled 200 ksec EUVE observation on 1998 Jan 29 - Feb 6. Contemporaneous radio and optical Doppler imaging observations will be obtained. A 150 ksec observation is requested so that most of the EUVE observation can be covered allowing contemporaneous flare data, while acquiring sufficient quiescent data to provide coronal abundances. Coronal spectroscopy provided by ASCA and EUVE allows modelling of coronal structure and flares at a level of sophistication unattainable with earlier instruments or either satellite alone.
