ASCA OBSERVATIONS OF MAGNETIC OLD NOVAE

ABSTRACT

Some famous classical novae (GK Per, DQ Her, and V1500 Cyg) contain a magnetic white dwarf primary. Such systems offer unique insights into the physics of classical nova explosion on the one hand, and that of magnetic accretion on the other. In particular, there are few secure distance estimates for intermediate polar (IP) subclass of magnetic cataclysmic variables, which can be routinely obtained for classical novae. We therefore propose ASCA observations of two novae, V1425 Aql and HZ Pup, that have recently proposed to be IPs, based on persistent and coherent optical pulsations. A detection of X-ray pulses at the same periods would establish them as IPs beyond doubt, and provide a starting point for further studies.
