A SEARCH FOR X-RAY COUNTERPARTS OF EGRET GEV SOURCES

ABSTRACT

We propose to observe three GeV error boxes of EGRET Galactic plane sources. ASCA observations are a particularly powerful means of identifying absorbed X-ray counterparts for the gamma-ray emitters. Our proposed 40ks observations will allow us to check that these sources are not EGRET blazars viewed through the plane and will provide localizations needed for low energy counterpart studies. In particular, we expect in several cases to detect extended power-law emission, consistent with a young pulsar-driven plerion. These data will provide important constraints on the nature of the galactic gamma-ray sources and will constitute a sensitive search for nebulae associated with young, spin-powered pulsars.
