Subject: SUPERNOVA REMNANTS AND GALACTIC DIFFUSE EMISSION

A FOLLOWUP OBSERVATION OF THE COMPOSITE REMNANT MSH15-56

ABSTRACT

We propose a followup ASCA observation of the supernova remnant MSH15-56. MSH15-56 is the archetypical example of a ``composite'' SNR in the radio and has a complex, center-filled morphology in X-rays. Our previous observation shows that the central emission is mostly thermal in origin however, we detected a localized region of non-thermal X-ray emission near the shell of the remnant and NOT in the central region as anticipated. Unfortunately, our first observation could not cover the entire remnant. The proposed observation will complete the coverage of this important remnant by ASCA allowing us to extract the temperature and intensity profile for the entire remnant to compare with models for producing a center-filled morphology and to search for other regions with non-thermal emission.
