PROPOSED ASCA OBSERVATIONS OF NGC5548

ABSTRACT

We propose six 30ks ASCA observations of the bright Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC5548 over a period of 20-40 days. Along with coordinated RXTE observations, a 30ks integration will allow us to measure the warm absorption features, the broad iron fluorescence line, and the `reflected' continuum. We will search for variability of the iron line profile/strength and study the physical implications for any such variability on the nature of the inner disk. The instantaneous iron-line/reflection-continuum form will constrain the iron abundance and probe the absolute normalization of the reflection component. Our temporal study of the warm absorption features will allow the location of this material to be constrained, allowing us to relate the warm absorber to other known structures.
