ASCA OBSERVATIONS OF A COMPLETE SOFT X-RAY SELECTED SAMPLE OF AGN

ABSTRACT

Soft X-ray selection picks out unabsorbed objects which have strong "soft excesses". This energetically important component, likely the high energy tail of the accretion disk spectrum, plays an important role in production of optical emission lines and hard X-ray spectra. Proposed ASCA observations of the 8 remaining objects in a complete sample of 19 soft X-ray selected AGN will yield hard X-ray spectra and variability information. Statistical analysis of these results with an existing database of multiwaveband and optical properties will be performed. Coordinated EUVE observations will yield simultaneous soft X-ray light curves. These results will allow us to significantly advance our understanding of the relationships between the soft excess, multiwaveband,
