A SEARCH FOR VARIATIONS IN THE X-RAY ABSORBER FOR A SEYFERT 2 GALAXY.
ABSTRACT
It has never been unambiguously established whether the X-ray absorber in Seyfert 2 galaxies is variable. Some tentative claims have been made to this effect, but these have been based either upon comparison between observations made by different X-ray detectors, or based upon data from instruments with a large field-of-view, where contaminating X-ray sources cast doubt on the origin of the spectral variability. The moderate spatial resolution and good spectral resolution of ASCA allow us the opportunity to establish absorption variability in a Seyfert 2 galaxy. We propose to monitor NGC 526A, which has shown marked X-ray spectral variability in the past.
