ASCA OBSERVATIONS OF OPTICALLY SELECTED QUASARS

ABSTRACT

Most AGN observed by ASCA have been chosen either on the basis of their X-ray flux, or some known peculiarity. This causes severe biases when analyzing samples of AGN and correlating the X-ray properties with those at other wavebands. We propose to observe 10 optically selected quasars which, combined with previous ASCA data, will form a complete sample of 23 PG quasars. The target sources are well studied in the radio, optical, UV and soft X-ray regimes. Our intention is to determine their hard X-ray spectra for comparison with these other bands. Previously-reported relations between, e.g., spectral index and optical line width, iron K-alpha EW and luminosity will be investigated in an unbiased manner for the first in the hard X-ray band.
