X-RAY AND EUV ABSORPTION IN BL LACERTAE OBJECTS

ABSTRACT

There is mounting evidence from higher-sensitivity X-ray and EUV data that ionized gas is present in the inner regions of BL Lacs, with low column densities and ionization parameters. The EUV/X-ray absorber represents a new and exciting component of BL Lacs, opening up the central regions of these objects for detailed study. We propose simultaneous EUVE and ASCA spectroscopy of 3 bright BL Lacs where evidence for intrinsic X-ray absorption was found recently. The ASCA observations will allow us to: (1) determine tightly the continuum to study EUV absorption, (2) study absorption due to ionized oxygen, and (3) investigate correlated X-ray and EUV flux variability.
