ASCA SPECTROSCOPY OF BRIGHT, INTERACTING SOFT X-RAY SELECTED SEYFERTS

ABSTRACT

We have optically identified the brightest ~1000 ROSAT All-Sky-Survey sources. We now have a statistically complete sample of bright, soft X-ray Seyfert galaxies, equivalent to the hard-X-ray-selected Piccinnotti-sample. A large fraction of the new sources shows signatures of interaction. Hard X-ray spectra of some sample objects taken with ASCA and XTE, quite unexpectedly show that their X-ray continua can be described by a single power law spectrum in the whole 0.1-10 keV band, with an energy index typically above 1.0, inconsistent with the conventional spectral model for hard X-ray selected Seyferts. Here we propose to take 20 ksec ASCA spectra of the three brightest interacting Seyfert galaxies never observed at hard X-rays.
