IS RX J1838.4-0301 A MAGNETAR IN A SUPERNOVA REMNANT?

ABSTRACT

RX J1838.4-0301 is a point source in the supernova remnant (SNR) G28.8+1.5. A 5.45-s pulsation was found from the ROSAT observation and similarity of this system to the anomalous 6-s pulsar 1E2259+586/G109-1.0 system is proposed. However, there is an argumenet on the 6-s pulsar hypotesis of this pulsar. On the other hand, a hypotesis of a magnetar was proposed for the 1E 1841-045 /Kes 73 system which has properties similar to the above mentioned two systems. We propose ASCA observations of the RX J1838.4-0301/G28.8+1.5 system to confirm the 5.45-s pulsations of the source, to investigate the possibility of this source to be a magnetar, and to study the association of this source with the SNR.
