THE SLEEPING BEAUTY WITH A BLACK EYE, NGC4826

ABSTRACT

The early-type spiral galaxy NGC 4826 is sometimes called a black-eye galaxy or a sleeping beauty because of the dark lane running at about 2 kpc from the center of the galaxy. This galaxy possesses a very unique gas disk; the sign of the rotation changes at the dark lane. This suggests that this spiral galaxy has undergone and is still undergoing a significant degree of structural evolution due to mergers. The ASCA observation of this galaxy will probes what is happening inside the dark lane where the flip of the rotation occurs, and in the nuclear region of the galaxy.
