AN X-RAY STUDY OF A "NAKID CENTRAL DOMINANT GALAXY" NGC 6034

ABSTRACT

Giant elliptical galaxy NGC 6034 is quite unique in the following points; it locates at very periphery of Hercules cluster in spite that it is a "true" cD galaxy (i.e. it posseses an extended cD envelope) which always resides only at central regions of groups and clusters of galaxies; and it overwhelmingly dominates a small loose subcluster containing it. These allowed us to regard NGC 6034 as a "nakid central dominant galaxy" which gives a rare chance for direct observation of interstellar hot gas in central dominant galaxies; usually, such an observation is hard since they are buried at bottom of X-ray emission of surrounding intracluster gas. From this viewpoint we propose an ASCA 100 ksec observation of NGC 6034.
