SIMULTANEOUS OBSERVATIONS OF NGC5548 WITH ASCA AND AXAF; EMISSION AND ABSORPTION OF WARM GAS IN AGN

ABSTRACT

The warm absorber in AGN is responsible for the absorption feature found in the ASCA X-ray spectrum at 0.75 and 0.85 keV, which are attributed to OVII and OVIII edges. The emission line feature from these ionized gas is suggested in EUVE observations. We propose to observe both emission lines and absorption feature in the simultaneous observations with AXAF and ASCA. To detect emission lines, Kaastra et al. decided to observe NGC 5548 with LETG and HRS of AXAF for 80 ksec (Guaranteed Time: ~ 1 day for AXAF). Current plan with ASCA is 100 ksec (~ 2.5 days) including the AXAF observation period. The plasma diagnostics is possible by the high resolution spectroscopy of emission lines, while the continuum spectrum, edge energy and optical depth are to be determined in ASCA observations.
