SPECTRUM AND PERIODICITY OF THE SOFT GAMMA REPEATER SGR1627-41

ABSTRACT

In May of this year, a new soft gamma repeater, SGR1627-41, was discovered by Ulysses, BATSE, and KONUS-WIND. Its location is consistent with that of the galactic SNR G337.0-0.1. Just several days ago, we received data from a BeppoSAX ToO observation of this region. A quiescent soft X-ray point source is present at a position which is consistent with that of the SNR and the triangulated position. Because other SGRs have soft X-ray point source counterparts, we believe that this is the X-ray counterpart to the SGR. If so, its spectrum is probably a power law, and it should have a periodicity in the several to ten second range. We are requesting an ASCA observation to confirm this.
