Subject: SUPERNOVA REMNANTS AND GALACTIC DIFFUSE EMISSION

A NEW 7 SECOND X-RAY PULSAR NEAR THE SUPERNOVA REMNANT KES 75

ABSTRACT

We propose a follow-up ASCA observation of the newly discovered 7-s X-ray pulsar, PSR J1845-0258, to determine its timing and spectral parameters. PSR J1845-0258 is the latest addition to the rare class of anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs), often associated with young supernova remnants. In fact, a hitherto unknown shell-like, radio source has been found to coincide with the ASCA error circle of this object. The proposed observation will yield spin and flux measurements allowing us to constrain the emission properties and mechanism, and search for an enormous P dot as would be the case if the pulsar were powered by an underlying magnetar.
