ASCA OBSERVATIONS OF NGC 3783: SUPPORTING AXAF GRATING SPECTROSCOPY AND MONITORING ITS VARIABLE WARM ABSORBER

ABSTRACT

We propose three 20 ks observations of the bright Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3783 that will support our upcoming AXAF grating spectroscopy and monitor variability of its strong Warm Absorber (WA). Grating spectroscopy of emission/absorption lines from the WA is expected to provide the best constraints yet on the geometry and dynamics of this gas, but emission line strengths will depend upon the history of the variable ionizing continuum. Two of our ASCA observations will determine this crucial luminosity/spectral history, and the third will let us unambiguously interpret our AXAF results relative to the extensive ASCA work on NGC 3783. ASCA observations will also study the response of WA edges to changes in the ionizing continuum, and they will monitor long-term WA variability.
