DEEP ASCA OBSERVATIONS OF COOL GALAXY GROUPS

ABSTRACT

We propose to observe two cool galaxy groups with ASCA to explore the enrichment of the group gas. Previous ASCA observations show that the metal abundance of hot gas in groups varies strongly from group to group, with the hottest groups being the most metal rich. In addition, for a few groups the ratio of Si to Fe can be well determined. This ratio is used to infer the origin of the metals. The hot groups have a Si/Fe ratio of ~2 which indicates that type II S Ne dominate the enrichment process. The cooler groups (kT ~ 1keV) have Si/Fe ratio near 1, which is more consistent with type I SNe. Observations of these cool groups (kT~0.8) will allow us to measure the abundance of Si and Fe and thus determine the enrichement history of the least massive groups detected in X-rays.
