THE COMPLEX X-RAY SPECTRUM OF EF ERI

ABSTRACT

We propose a second ASCA observation of the (usually) X--ray bright polar, EF Eri, to be simultaneous with already accepted XTE and EUVE observations. The initial ASCA observation is insufficient for this purpose as the system has been in an extended low state for the past two years, so its accretion geometry may be very different when the X-ray emission resumes. Simultaneous data are essential in order to build a reliable composite broad band spectrum, with unprecedented spectral coverage from 0.4--60 keV, enabling the continuum shape, reflection spectrum, complex continuum absorption and emission line properties to be studied in detail.
