PEERING BEYOND THE NUCLEAR DISKS SURROUNDING THE ELLIPTICAL GALAXY NGC 7052

ABSTRACT

Recent HST, VLBI and X-ray observations have shed light into the existence of massive black holes, in a likely quiescent state of accretion, in normal galaxies. Since the X-ray band provides a unique diagnostic probe to study the regions surrounding the central "engine", we propose a 100 ks observation of the elliptical galaxy NGC 7052, characterized by a dust and gas disk within a radius of about 1 kpc, with ASCA, which offers a broad band, good spectral resolution and great sensitivity at low energies, where the bulk of the X-ray emission comes from. NGC 7052 has never been observed before in X-rays. It will be possible to study the nature of the soft X-ray emission and the contribution of X-ray binaries to the hard X-rays and to properly model the inferred multi-phase plasma.
