THE X-RAY SPECTRA OF SEYFERT 2 GALAXIES SELECTED BY [OIII]FLUX


ABSTRACT

We propose to observe 4 Seyfert 2 galaxies from the Ho et al., 1997 magnitude-limited (Bt<12.5 mag) sample of 486 bright,nothern galaxies. We selected sources according to [OIII] emission and predicted X-ray unabsorbed fluxes were estimated using the correlation between [OIII] and hard X-ray flux (Alonso-Herrero,1997).Our knowledge of the X-ray properties of Sy 2 nuclei is restricted to objects selected on the basis of their hard X-ray emission,which may be biased with regard to power law slopes and absorbing columns.We expect to constrain both the power law slope and absorbing column for these objects.We also expect to help determine the contribution of Sy 2 galaxies to the X-ray background,since recent deep ROSAT and ASCA surveys have detected a large number of NELGS at faint fluxes.
