THE FIRST CONTINUOUS X-RAY COVERAGE OF A COMPLETE DWARF NOVA OUTBURST CYCLE


ABSTRACT

The long-look observations of ASCA in AO-8 provide an unique opportunity to observe a dwarf nova continuously throughout its outburst cycle. Such an observation has never before been made. Previous monitoring observations have suffered from sparse coverage and the results have always been ambiguous. By observing the system YZ Cnc, which has very frequent outbursts, we will obtain the first X-ray lightcurve with similar quality to the optical lightcurves we have enjoyed for decades. Just as these optical observations have driven the development of the disk instability model, we fully expect the ASCA long-look to drive the development of models of the inner accretion disk and boundary layer.
