Target Info
Target Name: GX 339-4
Target No.: 6365
Category: X-RAY BINARIES
Coordinates[J2000]: (255.70575, -48.78976)
Exp (ks): 160
Extended: N

Background Restriction: N

Constraint Details
Monitor: Y
Criteria: We request the observing time to be split into 10 ks per day for 16 days, to cover the bright hard-to-soft transition. Considering the unpredictable evolving timescale of black hole transients (usually ~a week in transition), a daily cadence is preferred; and if the source enters the soft state before the end of this month, we will reduce the coverage, or let GO program in soft state be triggered.

Start: 2021-03-16 00:00 UTC
End: 2021-04-01 00:00 UTC
Remarks: NICER already has this target in planned schedule until 2021-03-15 on a daily cadence, triggered by our GO program, so we are requesting coverage after that until the end of this month. With the SALT team planning to observe on a daily cadence, NICER could also try to cover 00:00-03:00 UT, which is the visibility constraint of SALT.
ToO: Y
Coordinate Observation: Preferred
Observatory: NuSTAR
Description: Members of our team requested and were approved NuSTAR DDT, so NuSTAR is likely to be carrying out several observations of GX 339-4 in the same timeframe as our campaign. We request, when possible, that NICER tries to achieve some overlapping coverage given the complementary nature of the instruments which is beneficial for both spectral and timing analysis.
