General considerations

The point source detection sensitivity depends on the imaging properties of the telescope and the background against which a point source is to be detected. For ROSAT four sources of background are relevant: instrumental background (dark currents), background produced by the local space environment (usually charged particles), scattered solar radiation and the diffuse celestial X-ray background. For the various instruments onboard ROSAT the different background components contribute differently and will therefore be discussed separately.
