RXTE Lends Support to Theoretically Predicted Photon Bubbles

April 14, 1999

J Garrett Jernigan (UC Berkeley) and colleagues presented a press release at the recent AAS High Energy Astrophysics Division (HEAD) meeting describing their RXTE results of very fast X-ray flickering in X-ray pulsar Centaurus X-3. Fluctuations in this range support the group's numerical modeling results of photon bubble oscillations.

The combined numerical and observational results imply a size of about 20 square kilometers for the X-ray emitting region on the surface of the neutron star. Further details can be found on the Structure and Evolution of the Universe Press Releasees page.
