Physics Today Highlights Contributions of RXTE and other Orbiting Observatories to New Views of Neutron Stars

February 12, 1999

A feature article, "New Views of Neutron Stars", by Lars Bildsten and Tod Strohmayer appears in the February 1999 issue of Physics Today on page 40. The article highlights the contributions that recent orbiting observatories have made to our understanding of neutron stars and their extreme environments. In particular, the opening of the millisecond time window into the study of low mass X-ray binaries with the launch of RXTE is presented. Contributions of BATSE and BeppoSAX are also reviewed, as well as the anticipated insight expected from LIGO, Chandra and others.
