For more than 7 years the ROSAT observatory is providing us with
thousands of high quality images from all over the sky. Here are a few
numbers that underline the high efficiency of the ROSAT mission:
About 80.000 sources were detected in the initial All-Sky Survey at a
completeness coverage of 99.9975 % for exposures >= 30 sec. It was
followed up to December 9, 1997 by pointings to 8632 sky fields, of which
53.5/46.5 % were made with the PSPC/HRI detector. The accumulated net
observation times of all pointings amount to 1035 days, which implies a
ROSAT data collection efficiency of 41 %. About 62/38 % of the time
data were taken with the HRI/PSPC detector. In the meantime 84 % of all
pointed observations are in the public data archives.
As many as 800 colleagues from 25 countries have applied as PI for ROSAT
observing time and more than 2400 papers using ROSAT data have appeared
in scientific journals up to now.

SATELLITE STATUS
================
>From November 11 to 14 a second battery reconditioning was performed while
the observing program continued with only a few restrictions. Checks
indicate that the reconditioning had a positive effect on the behaviour
of individual battery cells.

HRI - HIGH VOLTAGE SETTING INCREASED
====================================
On December 8 the high voltage setting of the HRI detector was increased
from step 13 to step 14 to compensate for a slow decay of the detector
gain during the past years. This procedure had already been performed
successfully in June 1994. At that time no noticeable effects on those
detector characteristics that influence data evaluation were observed.
Looking at the pulse height distribution (PHA), please note that a HV
change by one step shifts the PHA distribution by something like two
of the 16 channels.
Detailed comparisons on source spectra taken before and after the new
setting will be undertaken during the next weeks.

AO-8 MISSION TIMELINE STARTED
=============================
Since December 15 ROSAT is working on the mission timeline for AO-8.
The summary protocol and the timeline for the first half of AO8
(Dec 15 - Jun 15, 1998) can be accessed via the new www page
http://www.rosat.mpe-garching.mpg.de/rda/mtl
If you have targets in the timeline, please check their correct position
and scheduling (for time critical obs) as soon as possible. The number of
errors usually is not negligible.

SYMPOSIUM: HIGHLIGHTS IN X-RAY ASTRONOMY
========================================
In honour of Joachim Tr"umper's 65th birthday an X-ray symposium will
be held in Garching, Germany on June 17/18, 1998. Details on the
program and pre-registration forms are available via
http://www.rosat.mpe-garching.mpg.de/conferences/xray-symp/
