S h i f t of deadline for XMM-Newton AO2

Following the recent tragic events in the US, the project scientist has
decided to extend the deadline for the submission of XMM-Newton AO-2
proposals to:
25-October-2001 12:00 UT !!!
Pls. note that for common ESO/XMM-Newton proposals the deadlines (see
section 5.2.4 of the "Policies and Procedures" document) still apply.

THIRD ANNOUNCEMENT

ABSTRACT DEADLINE
Due to the recent tragic events in the US, the abstract deadline for the
"New Visions" Symposium will be extended to Monday, October 1st 2001.
SYMPOSIUM WORKSHOPS
Workshop WA1 on "Cooling flows" will not now be included in the Symposium
programme. Papers submitted for this workshop will be accommodated in
the plenary sessions if selected for oral presentation, or as posters
otherwise.
The remaining workshops will go ahead as announced. Each workshop has
a coordinator who is responsible, in conjunction with the Scientific
Organising Committee, for the workshop's programme. Those interested
in participating in the workshops are invited to contact the
coordinator directly to discuss possible contributions, although all
workshop presentations MUST nevertheless be accompanied by an abstract
submitted through the on-line system.
Poster papers *only* will be accepted on topics related to the data
analysis workshops (WA3/WB3) as these will be practical, hands-on
sessions.

SELECTION OF ORAL PRESENTATIONS
As previously announced, the Scientific Organising Committee will
select some papers for oral presentation, other contributed papers
will be presented in the form of posters.
The Scientific Organising Committee also intends to select a limited
number of additional "invited" papers from the abstracts received.
Such papers will be allocated a longer slot in the programme.
ON-LINE ABSTRACT SUBMISSION
The on-line system has recently been updated so that the choice of
topics offered on the forms more correctly matches the symposium
sessions.
Symposium participants are reminded that only abstracts submitted
through the on-line system can be considered for the Symposium.

Pipeline re-processing of pn extended full frame mode data
==========================================================
Observation data files (ODFs) containing pn exposures in "Extended Full Frame"
mode are currently being re-processed by the Survey Science Center.
This activity allows previously unrecognized pn exposures to be correctly
processed by the SAS. The re-processed pipeline products (of all instruments),
together with the corresponding ODFs, are being shipped to the PI.
Some XMM-Newton PIs will therefore receive within the next weeks a second
copy of their XMM-Newton data CD-ROM. The CD will most likely contain
additional pn PPS data with respect to the first delivery, together with a
more recent processing of data from all other instruments.
Processing of observations with EPIC cal-closed exposures
=========================================================
EPIC monitoring observations with the filter wheel in position "closed" or
"cal-closed" are performed in the ascending/descending parts of a revolution
prior/posterior to the time when EPIC scientific observations are possible.
This means that in addition to EPIC data only useful for calibration, on
target OM and RGS scientific data are collected in parallel.
These are pipeline processed and shipped to the PI.
As the EPIC exposures do not contain any scientific data related to a
guaranteed or open time proposal, this data will not be processed by the
SSC pipeline and hence no EPIC products from these exposures are delivered
to the PI.
