Announcement of the Fermi S-Z School

Recent high-quality ground-based, balloon-borne and satellite
measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation
have  greatly advanced the ability to study the global properties
and the large scale structure of the Universe at an unprecedented
level of precision. In the vast expanses of clusters of galaxies
the CMB is Compton-scattered by intracluster gas, a process that
imprints on it characteristic spectral and spatial signatures -
the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (S-Z) effect. The coupling of the most
important radiation field in the Universe with the largest bound
systems constitutes an indispensable cosmological and cluster probe. 
The tremendous experimental, observational and theoretical progress 
in recent years has advanced the S-Z effect to a major research 
theme in Cosmology.

This is the first school devoted primarily to the S-Z effect, 
related CMB results, and the astrophysics of clusters. The main goal 
will be to provide a comprehensive pedagogical exposition to all major
theoretical and observational aspects of the S-Z effect - review
of the theory, measurements, and use of the effect as a cosmological
and cluster probe. Review topics include:

- Recent measurements of CMB anisotropy
- Cosmological parameters from WMAP and galaxy surveys
- Theory of the S-Z effect
- Measurement techniques: single dish and interferometric arrays
- Recent measurements of the S-Z effect
- The S-Z effect as a cosmological probe
- Cosmological and cluster parameters from S-Z measurements
- Cluster properties from recent X-ray observations
- Hydrodynamic simulations of clusters
- Predicted and observed correlations between cluster quantities
- CMB anisotropy induced by the S-Z effect
- S-Z polarization
- Ground based and stratospheric S-Z projects
- Cluster X-ray, S-Z and lensing surveys
- S-Z survey with the HFI on the Planck satellite

The School is hosted by The Enrico Fermi International School of Physics, 
one of the most significant cultural activities of the Italian Physical 
Society, founded in 1953 by SIF President, Prof. Giovanni Polvani. The 
Enrico Fermi School has its istitutional seat in the Villa Monastero in 
Varenna, undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and characteristic towns 
on the eastern shore of Lake Como. The mild climate and the picturesque 
surroundings provide a (hopefully) relaxing and peaceful stay. Villa 
Monastero, one of the most ancient and famous villas of the region with 
its impressive botanic garden, is a world renowned attraction. A monastery 
transformed into a residential palace, the Villa is now owned by the CNR 
(National Research Council) and administered by the Province of Lecco.
