GSFC XMM-Newton GOF Status Report #028: XMM-News #2 - First conference announcement
==============================================================
First conference announcement
``New Visions of the X-ray Universe in the XMM-Newton and Chandra era''
26-30 November 2001
ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands
This is the first announcement of a Symposium to be held from November 26th
to 30th, 2001, at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC)
in Noordwijk, The Netherlands. The Symposium will focus on the new results
emerging from ESA's XMM-Newton Observatory, NASA's Chandra Observatory,
and other missions, with the aim of providing a coherent view of recent
progress in high energy astrophysics.
The complete announcement and call for papers can be found on the symposium
web page at: http://www.estec.esa.nl/conferences/01C12/
Symposium Rationale
The XMM-Newton and Chandra space observatories have now been operating for
more than one year. Compared to their predecessors, this new generation of
X-ray observatories combines a larger collecting area with a higher spatial
and spectral resolution. This allows the scientific community to perform
detailed morphological studies, spectral-imaging and medium- to
high-resolution spectroscopy on a large number of X-ray sources that were
previously inaccessible at such a level of detail and accuracy. It is these
results which provide new visions of the X-ray universe.
The Symposium is scheduled to last 4.5 days and will embrace the wide range
of astrophysics in which XMM-Newton and other missions are making important
advances. Session topics will include:
stars, stellar systems, planetary & comet studies,
interacting binary systems, SNR, pulsars,
the ISM and diffuse Galactic emission,
AGN, galaxies, clusters of galaxies,
surveys, population studies and the cosmic X-ray background
