The official "Announcement of Opportunity" will be made public in a
dedicated issue of this Newsletter and on the XMM-Newton Science
Operations Centre web site.

XMM-Newton Users Handbook update for AO-12
==========================================

The XMM-Newton Users Handbook (UHB) has been updated to version 2.10
in preparation for the next Announcement of Opportunity (AO-12).

The UHB contains information on the instrumentation on board
XMM-Newton and serves as the main technical support document for
proposal preparation, based on which potential XMM-Newton users can
assess the technical feasibility of their planned observations.

The XMM-Newton Users Handbook is available on-line at

     http://xmm.esac.esa.int/external/xmm_user_support/documentation/uhb

Alternatively, pdf and postscript versions of the UHB can be
downloaded from the "XMM-Newton Proposer's Info and Manuals" portal at

     http://xmm.esac.esa.int/external/xmm_user_support/documentation

Let us know about XMM-Newton related Ph.D.
==========================================

The XMM-Newton team is collecting information about the completion of
doctorates and Ph.D. theses based on (or making use of) XMM-Newton
observations. Ideally, it is our intention to collect the complete
list of Ph.D. works based on XMM-Newton data and this is why we need
your help.

This information is one of the measures of the scientific impact of
XMM-Newton included in the proposal for mission extension that will be
presented to the ESA Advisory Structure next Autumn.

We would appreciate if you - being a candidate or supervisor of a
doctorate - could let us know the following details:

    * Year of the thesis
    * Candidate's name
    * Supervisor's name
    * Institution
    * Thesis Title
    * Statement that the thesis is either based on, or making use of, XMM-Newton observations

Please contact us through the helpdesk at:

     http://xmm.esac.esa.int/external/xmm_user_support/helpdesk.shtml

sending an e-mail with Subject: "Ph.D. thesis work". The message can
be flagged as private. In any case, all provided information will be
handled confidentially.

XMM-Newton Workshop "Galaxy Clusters as Giant Cosmic Laboratories":
===================================================================

Presentations and Posters available on-line The XMM-Newton science
workshop "Galaxy Clusters as Giant Cosmic Laboratories" was held at
ESAC from 21st to 23rd May 2012, with more than 110 registered
participants. Presentations and posters are available on-line at

     http://xmm.esac.esa.int/external/xmm_science/workshops/2012_science/

and stored in the ADS database under

     http://adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/nph-abs_connect?&ref_stems=2012gcgc.conf

Refereed proceedings are under preparation and will appear next year
as an issue of Astronomical Notes / Astronomische Nachrichten.

Yours sincerely,

XMM-Newton SOC
