XMM-Newton Users Handbook update for AO-15
------------------------------------------

The XMM-Newton Users Handbook (UHB) has been updated to version 2.13
in preparation for the next Announcement of Opportunity (AO-15) which
will open shortly.

The UHB contains information on the instrumentation on board
XMM-Newton and serves as the main technical support document for
proposal preparation, based on which potential XMM-Newton users can
assess the technical feasibility of their planned observations.

The XMM-Newton Users Handbook is available on-line at

http://xmm.esac.esa.int/external/xmm_user_support/documentation/uhb

Alternatively, pdf and postscript versions of the UHB can be
downloaded from the "XMM-Newton Proposer's Info and Manuals" portal at

http://xmm.esac.esa.int/external/xmm_user_support/documentation

XMM-Newton Workshop "The Extremes of Black Hole Accretion":
Presentations and Posters available on-line
-------------------------------------------

The XMM-Newton Science workshop "The Extremes of Black Hole Accretion"
was held at ESAC from 8th to 10th June 2015. Presentations and posters
are available on-line at

http://xmm.esac.esa.int/external/xmm_science/workshops/2015_science/

and stored in the ADS database under

http://adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/nph-abs_connect?ref_stems=ebha.conf

Refereed proceedings are under preparation and will appear next year
as an issue of Astronomical Notes / Astronomische Nachrichten.

ESA Research Fellowships in Space Science at ESAC
-------------------------------------------------

Postdoctoral fellowships in the area of Astronomy and Astrophysics
related to the X-ray observatory XMM-Newton are tenable at the
XMM-Newton Science Operations Centre in the European Space Astronomy
Centre (ESAC) located in Villafranca del Castillo, near Madrid, Spain.

The European Space Agency awards several postdoctoral fellowships each
year. The aim of these fellowships is to provide young scientists,
holding a PhD or the equivalent degree, with the means of performing
space science research in fields related to the ESA Science and
Robotic Exploration Programmes. The fellowships have a duration of
two years.

Applications are now solicited for fellowships in space science to
begin in the fall of 2016. Preference will be given to applications
submitted by candidates within five years of receiving their
PhD. Candidates not holding a PhD yet are encouraged to apply, but
they must provide evidence of receiving their degree before starting
the fellowship.

Research opportunities with XMM-Newton science staff include: studies
of the high energy emission of novae, galaxies, and AGN using
XMM-Newton data. Working at ESAC within the XMM-Newton team gives the
unique opportunity of being in contact with the calibration
scientists, the developers of the analysis software and the User
Support Group.

Please contact Norbert Schartel (Norbert.Schartel@sciops.esa.int) for
more details on ESA Research Fellowships related to XMM-Newton.

The deadline for applications is

                    1st October 2015

More information on the ESA Research Fellowship programme in Space
Science, on the conditions and eligibility, as well as the application
form can be retrieved from

http://cosmos.esa.int/fellowship.

Reminder on Registration Deadline:
"Exploring the Hot and Energetic Universe"
------------------------------------------

As announced in a previous issue of this Newsletter (#172), the
conference "Exploring the Hot and Energetic Universe: The first
scientific conference dedicated to the Athena X-ray observatory" will
take place from 8th to 10th September 2015 at ESAC, Madrid, Spain.

The conference website is available at

http://www.rssd.esa.int/index.php?project=CONF2015&page=ATHENA2015

We remind on the upcoming Registration Deadline which is Friday, 21st
August 2015.

Yours sincerely,

XMM-Newton SOC
