ROSAT Guest Observer Facility

Does the background vary in either detector (PSPC, HRI)?

(10/2/91)

The validation and verification people at SAO (B. Wilkes, L. David, F. Seward, F. Harnden) have observed the background to vary by about an order of magnitude on approximately 1000s-seconds times (i.e., at roughly the satellite orbital period), especially in the soft band. The sources are likely to be charged particles (since, if it were photons, then the image should show some vignetting, which is not observed) and aurorae.
