ROSAT Guest Observer Facility

Are there any problems with the background maps?

(8/1/92)

It is strongly recommended that the user not make use of the background maps as they appear on the ROSAT data tape. This recommendation is absolutely critical if the user's source is at all diffuse. The background maps are created by removing the point sources, and TREATING EVERYTHING ELSE AS BACKGROUND. In addition, a few observers have noticed that their background images have been mysteriously "scaled high," often by a factor of about 100. There is currently no known cause.
