Installation

It is recommended that you first install fv on your machine and then follow along by repeating each step in this tutorial. Alternatively, you can get an overview of fv just by reading through this tutorial and studying the snapshots of the various fv windows that are included.

Versions of fv are available for LINUX and Mac OS X as well as Microsoft Windows machines. Installation packages can be obtained from fv download web page here. Follow the simple installation instructions provided on that web page.

A few sample FITS files are included with fv and are located in the 'samples_data' and 'sample_scripts' subdirectory under the main fv installation directory. These sample FITS files will be used in the following tutorial.

As of fv 5.1, the installation package also create two other icons on user's desktop, Hera and Student Hera for Microsoft Windows OS and Mac OS X machine. These two icons will allow user to try out the HEASARC Hera service. For more information on the service Hera provides, please visit here for Hera and here for Student Hera.
