BATTEN - 8th Orbital Elements Catalog

HEASARC
Archive

Overview

This database table contains the basic data from the Eighth Catalogue of the Orbital Elements of Spectroscopic Binary Systems of Batten, Fletcher, and MacCarthy. The complete description of the catalog, as well as the notes, can be found in the published version of this catalog: Publ. Dominion Astrophys. Obs. Vol. 17, p. 1 (1989). The present version is based on the CDS/ADC version of this catalog that was itself transformed from the file provided by A. H. Batten for easier computer readability. Compared to the printed version, please note the omissions as found here (see Omissions).

This catalog has been superseded in the HEASARC database by the Ninth Catalogue of Spectroscopic Binary Orbits (Version April 2005). Please use SBORBITCAT instead.

Provenance

This HEASARC database table was created in October 1997, based on a machine-readable version (V/64) of the Batten catalog that was obtained from CDS/ADC. It was superseded in July 2006 when the HEASARC created the SBORBITCAT table.

Omissions

The four columns No., f(m), m.sin^3(i), and a.sin(i) are NOT included in the computer version.
= No. (running number) is the line number of the main file
                   (from 1 to 1469)
= f(m) (expressed in Solar Masses)
can be computed using the FORTRAN formula
                   1.0385E-07 * (1.-e*e)**1.5 * K(1)**3 * P
    = a(*)sin(i) (expressed in km)
can be computed using the FORTRAN formula
                   13751 * sqrt(1.-e*e) * K(*) * P
= m(*)sin^3(i) (expressed in Solar Masses)
can be computed using the FORTRAN formula
                   1.0385E-7 * (1.-e*e)**1.5 * K(*) * (K(1)+K(2))**2 * P

    The parameters are
           K(*) = velocity amplitude of the components, expressed in km/s;
           P    = Period, expressed in days;
           e    = eccentricity
The notes, which make the bulk of the printed catalog (pages 129-304), are NOT included in this version of the Batten catalog.

Parameters

Name
First name. If preceded by HD, it is the HD number. In the original catalog, there were Greek letters and other symbols that used TeX conventions, and we have stripped out such TeX characters in this version.

RA
The right ascension in the default equinox.

Dec
The declination in the default equinox.

LII
Galactic longitude of the object.

BII
Galactic latitude of the object.

Position_1900
Position as given in the original version of the data table. Values are hhmm.msddmm, where hhmm.m refers to hours and minutes of RA, s is the sign of declination, and ddmm refers to degrees and minutes of declination. These values are in 1900 coordinates, and were used to calculate the default equinox positions.

Alt_Name
Other name, if available. As with the Name parameter, TeX symbols have been stripped out of this field in the present version of this catalog.

Eb_Flag
'Y' if the star is an eclipsing binary.

Max_Mag
Apparent magnitude at maximum light.

Max_Mag_Band
V or B for photoelectric magnitudes; P for Photographic magnitude.

Max_Mag_Note
Remark or note flag that is set to 'Y' if the note in the published version of this catalog discusses this parameter.

Min_Mag
Apparent magnitude at minimum light.

Min_Mag_Band
V or B for photoelectric magnitudes; P for Photographic magnitude.

Min_Mag_Note
Remark or note flag that is set to 'Y' if the note in the published version of this catalog discusses this parameter.

Spect_Type_1
Spectral type of primary.

Spect_Type_1_Note
Remark or note flag that is set to 'Y' if the note in the published version of this catalog discusses this parameter.

Spect_Type_2
Spectral type of Secondary (if known).

Spect_Type_2_Note
Remark or note flag that is set to 'Y' if the note in the published version of this catalog discusses this parameter.

Period
Orbital period, generally in days unless otherwise specified.

Period_Flag
'Y' if Period is expressed in years rather than days.

Period_Note
Remark or note flag that is set to 'Y' if the note in the published version of this catalog discusses this parameter.

Periastron
Time of periastron passage in Julian Date minus 2,400,000 (JD - 2400000.). Notice that is NOT Modified Julian Date (MJD) which is JD - 2400000.5.

Periastron_Flag
A flag that is set to 'Y' if the periastron is expressed in years.

Periastron_Note
Remark or note flag that is set to 'Y' if the note in the published version of this catalog discusses this parameter.

Eccent_1
The eccentricity e of the primary.

Eccent_1_Note
Remark or note flag that is set to 'Y' if the note in the published version of this catalog discusses this parameter.

Eccent_2
The eccentricity e of the secondary, if different than that of the primary (Eccent_1).
