SPASS2P3GH - S-PASS (S-Band Polarization All-Sky Survey) 2.3-GHz Source Catalog

Overview

The S-band Polarization All-Sky Survey (S-PASS) has observed the entire southern sky using the 64-meter Parkes radio telescope at 2.3 GHz with an effective bandwidth of 184 MHz. The surveyed sky area covers all Declinations < 0 degrees. To analyze compact sources the survey data have been re-processed to produce a set of 107 Stokes I maps with 10.75-arcminute resolution and the large scale emission contribution filtered out. In this paper, the authors use these Stokes I images to create a total intensity southern-sky extragalactic source catalog at 2.3 GHz. The source catalog contains 23,389 sources and covers a sky area of 16,600 deg2, excluding the Galactic plane for latitudes |b| < 10 degrees. Approximately 8% of the catalogued sources are resolved. S-PASS source positions are typically accurate to within 35 arcseconds. At a flux density of 225 mJy, the S-PASS source catalog is more than 95% complete, and ~94% of S-PASS sources brighter than 500 mJy/beam have a counterpart at lower frequencies.

The observations were carried out over the period from October 2007 to January 2010 using the Parkes S-band receiver. The S-band receiver is a package with: a system temperature Tsys = 20K, a beam Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) of 8.9 arcminutes, and a circular polarization front-end that is ideal for linear polarization observations with single-dish telescopes.

Provenance

This table was ingested by the HEASARC in August 2017 based on the CDS catalog J/other/PASA/34.13 file s-pass.dat.

Parameters

Name
The source designation for the radio source using the 'SPASS' prefix recommended by the authors and the J2000.0 position, e.g., 'SPASS JHHMMSS+DDMMSS'. In both the printed version and the CDS input file, an '_' character was used between the 'SPASS' prefix and the 'JHHMMSS+DDMMSS' part of the name which the HEASARC has removed so as to ensure that the names conform with the naming convention recommended by the CDS Dictionary of Nomenclature of Celestial Objects.

RA
The Right Ascension of the radio source in the selected equinox. This was given in J2000.0 coordinates to a precision of 0.01 seconds of time in the original table.

Dec
The Declination of the radio source in the selected equinox. This was given in J2000.0 coordinates to a precision of 0.01 arcseconds in the original table.

LII
The Galactic Longitude of the radio source.

BII
The Galactic Latitude of the radio source.

RA_Error
The rms uncertainty in the Right Ascension of the radio source, in arcseconds, as quoted by the source-finding algorithm AEGEAN (see Hancock et al. 2012 at http://ascl.net/1212.009).

Dec_Error
The rms uncertainty in the Declination of the radio source, in arcseconds, as quoted by the source-finding algorithm AEGEAN (see Hancock et al. 2012 at http://ascl.net/1212.009).

Flux_2p3_GHz
The peak flux density of the radio source at 2307 MHz (2.307 GHz), in mJy/beam (converted by the HEASARC from the Jy/beam units used in the original table).

Flux_2p3_GHz_Error
The rms uncertainty in the peak flux density of the radio source at 2307 MHz (2.307 GHz), in mJy/beam (converted by the HEASARC from the Jy/beam units used in the original table). These uncertainties do not include flux scaling errors.

Int_Flux_2p3_GHz
The integrated flux density of the radio source at 2307 MHz (2.307 GHz), in mJy (converted by the HEASARC from the Jy units used in the original table).

Int_Flux_2p3_GHz_Error
The rms uncertainty in the integrated flux density of the radio source at 2307 MHz (2.307 GHz), in mJy (converted by the HEASARC from the Jy units used in the original table). These uncertainties do not include flux scaling errors.

Bck_2p3_GHz
The background level in the S-PASS image in which the source was located, in mJy/beam (converted by the HEASARC from the Jy/beam units used in the original table). The Background And Noise Estimation tool (BANE; part of the AEGEAN tool set) was used to create background and rms noise maps. Background values for the individual maps are expected to be close to zero, if slightly negative, due to the median filtering applied to the images. Typical background values measured by BANE are ~ -2.3 mJy beam-1, but range from -3.7 mJy beam-1 to 0.5 mJy beam-1.

RMS_2p3_GHz
The local rms noise in the S-PASS image in which the source was located, in mJy/beam (converted by the HEASARC from the Jy/beam units used in the original table). The Background And Noise Estimation tool (BANE; part of the AEGEAN tool set) was used to create background and rms noise maps.

Semimajor_Axis
The semi-major axis of the best-fit elliptical Gaussian model to the source, in arcseconds.

Semimajor_Axis_Error
The rms uncertainty in the semi-major axis of the best-fit elliptical Gaussian model to the source, in arcseconds. Null values for the Gaussian fit errors indicate either a fitting error, or a nearly-circular source for which the semi-major and semi-minor axis errors and position angle are poorly defined.

Semiminor_Axis
The semi-minor axis of the best-fit elliptical Gaussian model to the source, in arcseconds.

Semiminor_Axis_Error
The rms uncertainty in the semi-minor axis of the best-fit elliptical Gaussian model to the source, in arcseconds. Null values for the Gaussian fit errors indicate either a fitting error, or a nearly-circular source for which the semi-major and semi-minor axis errors and position angle are poorly defined.

Position_Angle
The position angle of the best-fit elliptical Gaussian model to the source, in degrees, measured eastward from north.

Position_Angle_Error
The rms uncertainty in the position angle of the best-fit elliptical Gaussian model to the source, in degrees. Null values for the Gaussian fit errors indicate either a fitting error, or a nearly-circular source for which the semi-major and semi-minor axis errors and position angle are poorly defined.

Residual_Mean
The residual mean (data minus model) from the fitting process, in mJy/beam (converted by the HEASARC from the Jy/beam units used in the original table). If a source has been well fitted, the residuals will be small.

Residual_Std_Dev
The residual standard deviation (data minus model) from the fitting process, in mJy/beam (converted by the HEASARC from the Jy/beam units used in the original table). If a source has been well fitted, the residuals will be small.
