UIT - Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope Near-UV Bright Objects Catalog

Overview

The Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT) Near-UV Bright Objects Catalog is a photometric catalog of 2244 objects detected by the UIT in the near-ultraviolet (NUV; 1650A<lambda<2900A) during the Astro-1 Space Shuttle mission. Sources in the catalog are as faint as near-UV magnitude m_nuv of about 18.8, or near-UV flux f_nuv ~ 1.1x10-16ergs/s/cm2/A, but the survey is not complete to this level. Optical catalogs were used to cross identify sources and derive near-UV to Johnson V colors. A majority of the objects (88%) do indeed have proposed optical identifications from catalogs, and most are stars. The authors' purpose in creating the catalog was to form a database useful for identifying very blue objects and for performing Galactic UV stellar population studies.

Parameters

Name
The full UIT Catalog Designation constructed using the CDS-recommended prefix 'SPB96' and the running catalog number (ordered in increasing J2000 RA).

RA
The Right Ascension of the source.

Dec
The Declination of the source.

LII
The Galactic Longitude of the source.

BII
The Galactic Latitude of the source.

Catalog_Number
The UIT Catalog entry number, a running number ordered in increasing J2000 RA.

NUV_Mag
The near-UV aperture magnitude of the source, through a fixed 8 arcsecond aperture. If the source was so bright that it saturated the film (flag_nuv_mag = 'S'), no magnitude is listed. The bulk of the sources (93%) in this catalog are from orbital night images obtained using the A1 filter which has a centroid wavelength of 2248 Angstroms and a width of 1272 Angstroms. The remainder of the sources were observed using either the A2 filter which has a centroid wavelength of 1892 Angstroms and a width of 412 Angstroms or the A5 filter which has a centroid wavelength of 2258 Angstroms and a width of 456 Angstroms. To determine which type of observation applies to a given entry, examine the value of the first digit of the object_type parameter: 1 means filter A1 was used, 2 means filter A2 was used, and 5 means filter A5 was used.

Flag_NUV_Mag
This is a flag which is set to 'S' for those sources which were so bright that they saturated the film.

NUV_Mag_Error
The uncertainty in the near-UV magnitude. If an object or its associated sky aperture fell too close to the image edge, no magnitude uncertainty is given. The photometry for these sources, as well as those which were so bright as to saturate the film, should be regarded as uncertain.

NUV_V_Color
The near-UV to Johnson V-band color, where the near-UV magnitude used to calculate the color is an aperture-corrected total magnitude, and the V magnitude is the catalogued or measured value.

Object_Type
This is a flag containing both the filter used and a crude object classification. The value of the first digit of this parameter is 1 if filter A1 was used, 2 if filter A2 was used, or 5 if filter A5 was used. The value of the second digit of this parameter is 0 for a catalogued stellar identification (either named or from the HST Guide Star catalog), 1 for a nonstellar source, or 2 for a proposed match from the Digitized Palomar Observatory Sky Survey (POSS: 265 such sources).

Notes
The name, if any, of the optical identification, or a brief note about the object. Most of the objects (those with the second digit of their object_type parameter = 0) match stars from the HST GSC, and these names are not listed here.

Frame
The UIT Frame Number Used for the photometry. More information on these frame numbers, e.g., what the corresponding targets were, is listed in the UIT_Pointings_in_Catalog section of this database help.
