CEPAXMM - Cepheus A SFR XMM-Newton X-Ray Point Source Catalog

Overview

Cepheus A is a star formation region (SFR) at a distance of ~ 730 pc consisting of two main H II regions, Cep A East and Cep A West. Cep A was observed with the EPIC cameras of the XMM-Newton observatory on 2003 August 23 for 43.9ks. In this observation, X-rays from both components of Cep A, East and West, were discovered by XMM-Newton, as well as from the Herbig-Haro object HH 168, which joins the ranks of other energetic H-H objects that are sources of temperature T >= 106 K X-ray emission. A total of 102 distinct X-ray sources were detected in this 44 ks observation, many presumed to be pre-main-sequence stars on the basis of the reddening of their optical and IR counterparts, the latter being found by matching the positions of the 102 X-ray sources with objects in the USNO-B1.0 (Monet et al. 2003, AJ, 125, 984) and Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) catalogs using a 2.5" matching radius.

The authors performed source detection on all the XMM-Newton data in two energy bands: 0.2 - 1 keV ("soft") and 1 - 10 keV ("hard"). They detected 24 soft sources and 85 hard sources. Seven of the sources appear in both bands, where the criterion for a match between the bands is a positional offset of < 2.5 arcseconds. Thus, the total number of distinct X-ray sources detected (and listed in this table) is 102.

Name
The name of the X-ray source using the 'XMMPT J' prefix (for XMM-Newton, Pravdo and Tsuboi) and the source position in J2000.0 coordinates truncated to 0.1 seconds of time in RA and 1 arcsecond in Declination, as pre-registered with the CDS Dictionary of Nomenclature of Celestial Objects.

RA
The Right Ascension of the X-ray source in the selected equinox. This was given in J2000.0 decimal degree coordinates to a precision of 10-4 degrees (0.26 arcseconds) in Table 2 of the reference paper.

Dec
The Declination of the X-ray source in the selected equinox. This was given in J2000.0 decimal degree coordinates to a precision of 10-4 degrees (0.26 arcseconds) in Table 2 of the reference paper.

LII
The Galactic Longitude of the X-ray source.

BII
The Galactic Latitude of the X-ray source.

SNR
The significance of the X-ray source detection, in sigma.

SB_Count_Rate
The soft-band (0.2 - 1 keV) count rate of the X-ray source, in counts per second.

HB_Count_Rate
The hard-band (1 -10 keV) count rate of the X-ray source, in counts per second. The criterion for a match between the soft and hard X-ray source is a positional offset of < 2.5 arcseconds.

USNOB1_Name
The numerical part of the USNO-B1.0 name of the optical counterpart to the X-ray source. The criterion for a match between the X-ray source and the catalog source is a positional offset of < 2.5 arcseconds.

Bmag
The USNO-B1.0 B magnitude of the optical counterpart to the X-ray source.

Rmag
The USNO-B1.0 R magnitude of the optical counterpart to the X-ray source.

Imag
The USNO-B1.0 I magnitude of the optical counterpart to the X-ray source.

TwoMASS_Name
The numerical part of the 2MASS name of the near-infrared counterpart to the X-ray source. The criterion for a match between the X-ray source and the catalog source is a positional offset of < 2.5 arcseconds.

Jmag
The 2MASS J magnitude of the near-infrared counterpart to the X-ray source.

Hmag
The 2MASS H magnitude of the near-infrared counterpart to the X-ray source.

Ks_Mag
The 2MASS Ks magnitude of the near-infrared counterpart to the X-ray source.

Alt_Name
An alternate name for the X-ray source and/or its optical or near-infrared counterpart. X1 and X2 are the names given in the reference paper to the 2 soft X-ray sources within HH 168, while HWX is the name adopted for the hard X-ray source XMMPT J225618.4+620147 which is located near the center of the radio activity in Cep A East. The objects labeled HL NN, are from Hartigan and Lada (1985, ApJS, 59, 383) while those labeled RXH and WGA refer to X-ray sources previously detected by the ROSAT HRI and PSPC detectors, respectively.
