Bruce H. Hemp is an 8th grade math teacher at S. G. Stewart Middle School in Fort Defiance, Virginia. She teaches pre-algebra, Algebra I, and an exploratory class in rocketry. She is also an adjunct faculty member at Mary Baldwin College in the Mathematics Department. During her nineteen years of teaching, she has taught high school math and designed and implemented the math program at Valley Vocational Technical Center for students who had not succeeded in the normal classroom. For the past two years, she has been a Master Teacher for the National Teacher Training Institute and selected as Virginia's 1998 NTTI Teacher of the Year. She has conducted workshops and in-service training sessions on topics including graphing calculators and CBL and LPT strategies. As an outreach coordinator for Virginia Network for Technology (VANT), Hemp has been instrumental in advancing the use of technology. She holds a BA in math and speech communication from Westhampton College, University of Richmond, and a EdM degree in math from the University of Virginia. She has been a participant in the NASA Educational Workshop for Math, Science, and Technology Teachers (NEWMAST) and has been a recipient of several grants which have allowed her to use technology in her classes. During the past two summers, she spent time at NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD as a visiting scientist. While at Goddard, she collaborated on lesson plans and grant proposals in the High Energy Astrophysics Science Archive Research Center.

Hemp serves as a deacon at Bethel Presbyterian Church, on the board of V2CTM (Valley of Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics), and as chairman of the Board of Trustees of Jacob's Ladder, a program for at-risk, gifted students. As an active member of Soroptimist International of Staunton, Bruce has been instrumental in creating a support group for victims of macular degeneration. An avid traveler, Bruce recently co-sponsored an eco-tour to the Yucatan Peninsula and has previously taken students and adults on tours of England, Italy, and France. She and her husband, Tom, own and operate Walnut Meadow Greenhouses. They have two sons, Hunter, 15, and Christopher, 13.
