B.4 PROSPECTS

Prospects for utilizing the OSSE high-range data for many galactic sources are slim and for AGN they are nil.

Are there any targets for which this analysis might yield useful information? We examined the Second EGRET Catalog (Thompson et al. 1995) for sources brighter than the Crab pulsar above 10 MeV. Only two sources appeared brighter: Geminga and the Vela pulsar, and even these were less than an order of magnitude brighter. At this point, unless a reliable new method of extracting such a faint signal from the background can be found, the OSSE high range data will only be usable for solar flares (DelSignore 1995), an occasional gamma-ray burst (Share et al. 1992), and perhaps a galactic supernova or other bright transient.
