Unattractive white backgrounds

Problem:
Mathematical symbols (along with figures & tables - ie all GIFs) have a white background, rather than a background the same colour as the WWW viewer.

Solution:
This is caused by the giftrans routine having been turned-off during the latex2html run. It should be turned on (via the GIFTRANS environment variable in the latex2html.config file) and latex2html re-run. HOWEVER: remember that users who have changed their XMOSAIC (etc) default background colour to black will now be unable to see the tables, figures, symbols since the GIFs are displayed as black-on-black under html (see Section 8.4.1).
