ROSAT Sky Survey

Map of the 3/4 keV diffuse background from the ROSAT all-sky survey. Data have been cleaned of contamination and corrected for exposure. The projection is in Galactic coordinates, centered on the Galactic center with longitude increasing to the left. The bright region in the center is a combination of emission from Loop I (a nearby supernova remnant) and probable Galactic bulge emission. The Vela SNR is at l,b~(265,-3), the Cygnus Superbubble is at ~(80,0), and the LMC is at ~(280,-32). (Credit: MPE ROSAT calendar.)
