SATELLITE STATUS

No unusual occurrences reported.

X-RAY CONFERENCE 1995 (September 25 to 29, 1995)

A conference circular will be distributed beginning of February.

ROSAT SOURCE CATALOGS

The ROSAT Source Catalog is now available as ASCII file rosatsrc.txt-gz (compressed with gzip) in the ROSAT Service Area, directory archive/sourcecat. A description of the ASCII file can be found in rosatsrc.txt-doc. (Access via ftp rosat_svc.mpe-garching.mpg.de user:anonymous).

Comparisons between the ROSAT Source Catalog and the WGA catalog by F.Haberl, W.Pietsch, and W.Voges (distributed by e-mail 2 weeks ago) showed a number of shortcomings in both catalogs. The WGA catalog is currently being recreated due to a systematic shift of about 17 arcseconds in the coordinates with respect to very accurate positions of SIMBAD-stars. A detailed discussion and relevant graphs of the present findings can be found in the file wga_rosatsrc.doc in the same directory archive/sourcecat. This directory can also be reached via the ROSAT homepage from mosaic.

Both catalogs will be updated from time to time to include new data from the ROSAT Data Archive.

UV STRUCTURES IN HRI IMAGES

Caution should be applied when interpreting results from ROSAT HRI observations due to the HRI sensitivity in the UV band. In a recent paper of H. Arp entitled "Ultraviolet Extensions Measured with ROSAT HRI around Active galaxies" (preprint available) it is nicely shown that the inclusion of the full HRI amplitude range in the analysis may display structures that are obviously not existing in more sensitive PSPC data from the same regions. A careful comparison of images produced in low and high amplitude bands is strongly recommended.

EXSAS

The MIDAS version 94NOV has just arrived. It is expected that versions of the EXSAS software, tested in the new MIDAS environment, will be available in the second half of January.
