R"ontgenstrahlung from the Universe
An International Conference on X-Ray Astronomy and Astrophysics
September 25-29, 1995
W"urzburg, Germany
organized jointly by
Max-Planck Institut f"ur Extraterrestrische Physik
and
Astronomisches Institut der Universit"at W"urzburg
Second Circular, May 1995
GENERAL
The conference will be part of the events celebrating the centennial of the
discovery of X-rays by Wilhelm Conrad R"ontgen on November 8, 1895 at the
University of W"urzburg. For this epochal discovery, R"ontgen received the
first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901.
At the same time the conference will mark the fifth anniversary of the
launch of ROSAT which was named after R"ontgen and which has produced a
wealth of new scientific data for a wide scientific community.
The scientific organization of the conference will be a joint effort
of the ROSAT centers located at MPE (Garching), GSFC (Maryland), and the
University of Leicester. It is a pleasure to invite you to participate in
the meeting.
Up to now more than 300 colleagues have registered for the conference,
of which 200 made a firm commitment. Please use the registration form in
the appendix for a firm commitment.

SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME
The conference will address the whole field of X-ray astronomy and X-ray
missions, although we anticipate from the titles so far submitted
that results from the ROSAT Observatory and the ASCA mission will
dominate the scientific programme. The program structure foresees
14 review talks (40 minutes) complemented by about 35 highlight talks
(20 minutes) and about 70 selected talks (15 minutes). Review and
highlight talks will be given in plenary meetings, while 2 parallel
sessions in the late afternoon will be organized for the selected talks.
Posters will be displayed in the lobby of the Auditorium Maximum
of the University of W"urzburg throughout the conference.
The following speakers have already agreed to give review or highlight
talks:
B. Aschenbach, M. Barstow, W. Becker, K. Beuermann, H. B"ohringer,
S. Bowyer, D. Burrows, J. Caillault, M. Elvis, P. Fabbiano, A. Fabian,
G. Hasinger, P. Henry, H. Inoue, S. Jordan, K. Koyama, K. Mason,
F. Mirabel, R. Mushotzsky, F. Nagase, R. Petre, T. Ponman, J. Pye,
S. Rappaport, J. Schmitt, S. Snowden, R. Sunyaev, R. Supper, Y. Tanaka,
Y. Uchida, F. Verbunt, H. Waite, H. Zinnecker
The Scientific Organizing Committee will select other talks from the
proposed contributions. Every colleague will be informed before the end of
June whether her/his oral contribution will be accomodated within the
overall time budget. We strongly recommend that proposed talks that can not
be given orally are presented as posters. Posters will be also published
in the proceedings.
CONFERENCE LOCATION
The conference will be held at the Auditorium Maximum of the Neue
Universit"at W"urzburg, located near to the city center.
Using the Auditorium Maximum relaxes the restrictions we had initially on
the number of participants.
ABSTRACTS, PAPERS, PROCEEDINGS:
Abstracts of talks and posters should be sent to the Conference Secretariat
by July 22 to be included in the conference abstract booklet. The abstract
should include the title, the authors and their affiliation as well as an
abstract text of no more than 200 words. You will help us strongly by using
the empty LATEX forms for the abstracts or papers available via the conference
www or ftp access (see paragraph ORGANIZATION).
Talks and poster contributions accepted by the scientific organizing
committee will be published in the conference proceedings.
CONFERENCE FEE:
The conference registration fee of DM 150 will include a copy of the
conference proceedings. The fee may be payed directly at the conference
desk.
GENERAL INFORMATION
W"urzburg is located in the middle of Germany, about 100 km east of
Frankfurt, on the river Main. The capital of Unterfranken (Bavaria) is
a town of about 130 thousand inhabitants and displays many colourful signs
of its long and eventful history. The magnificent Residenz, the Castle
Marienberg, beautiful churches and palaces as well as nearby medieval
villages and castles contribute as much to the specific character of this
city as the many wine-taverns and the university life.
The city lies at the intersection of major highways and railroad lines.
By plane you will arrive in Frankfurt and can then proceed to W"urzburg
via train in about an hour and a half. By car you may follow the Autobahn
from Frankfurt to N"urnberg and exit at W"urzburg - Heidingsfeld.
SOCIAL EVENTS
For Sunday, September 24, the evening before the conference,
an informal 'no host' COME TOGETHER at the wine restaurant B"urgerspital
will take place starting at 8 pm. You may have your dinner there and
use the conference desk to pay the registration fee and receive the
conference material.
Monday evening a guided wine tasting in the cellars of the Hofkellerei
is planned. The cellars, illuminated by candles, belong to the most
remarkable ones in Europe. Tickets (DM 30) will be available at the
conference desk. Participation is limited to about 150 people.
For Wednesday afternoon we will organize an excursion to historical sites
in the surroundings of W"urzburg.
The conference dinner will take place on Thursday evening in the castle
Marienberg. The dinner ticket will be DM 30.
HOTEL ACCOMODATION
For your hotel reservation please use the form enclosed with this circular
(mark 'inner city') and return it to the tourist office in W"urzburg.
The office will select hotels near to the conference location. Generally
hotels are booked heavily at this time of the year. Please make your
hotel reservation therefore as early as possible.

ROSAT AO - 6
============
The ROSAT Service Area (directory general) contains some AO-6 related
info and a LATEX version of the required proposal form.
Information on the sky fields already observed by ROSAT or in the
scheduling list until October 1995 can be looked at in directory
'timeline' in the ROSAT Service Area. The file 'master_obs.list'
lists all observations that have been processed by SASS. The files
'ao5_hri1.summary' for the first half of AO-5 and ao5_hri2.summary
for the second half cover the recent and future timeline scheduling.
In addition the file data_by_rascen.txt (directory archive) contain
also older TOOs (target of opportunity observations before 1994) and
observations from the early CV (Calibration and Verification) Phase.
An updated HRI Report (February 1995) is available via www:
http://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/rosat/rosgof.html.
An updated WFC report for AO-6 may be accessed via www:
http://ledas-ftp.star.le.ac.uk/rosat/ao6/
SPECTRAL CALIBRATION of the PSPC
================================
The SASS PSPC data processing software corrects for time and spatial
variations in the detector gain as part of the conversion from detected
pulse height to pulse invariant channels. Analysis of the in-flight AlK
calibration data has shown that there is an error in the spatial gain
correction currently applied in SASS, and also that there are uncalibrated
effects which need to be considered, requiring some additional correction
based on detector coordinates and arrival time (DETX, DETY, and TIME) of
each event. The AlK data allow us to construct a gain map which can be
used to correct the calibrated pulseheight data. Whether or not the
required correction is pulse-height dependent is not known, and will
require considerably more work to determine. The corrections are in the
order of a few percent.
Information on the present status is given in a new memo, entitled
"Status of the PSPC Spatial/Temporal Gain Calibration" by Snowden, Turner,
George, Yusaf, Predehl and Prieto. It is available in html and postscript
formats via the World Wide Web from
http://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/heasarc/caldb/docs/summary/
cal_ros_95_003_summary.html or in latex and postscript formats from the
legacy.gsfc anonymous ftp account under /caldb/docs/rosat/cal_ros_95_003/.
WGA CATALOG UPDATE
===================
A new version of the WGA source catalog includes various corrections
(especially of the source positions) and additional observations
recently released to the ROSAT Data Archive (RDA). For details see
http://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/~white/wgacat/rev1.html (www).
NEW WFC SOURCE CATALOG (POINTED PHASE) and WFC CALIBRATION ISSUES
=================================================================
Work on a ROSAT/WFC Pointed Phase Source Catalogue based on the
processing of the ROSAT/WFC data performed in Tuebingen has recently
been completed (Kreysing, Brunner, Staubert, 1995, submitted to A&A
Supp.). The catalogue covers all pointed ROSAT/WFC observations from the
time period June 20th, 1990 to July 15th, 1995. It lists 1016 individual
detections, corresponding to 321 detected sources. A continuously updated
version of the catalogue is kept on the public WFC archive account in
Tuebingen (login procedure: see header of newsletter).
A subset of 242 observations of non-variable White Dwarfs from this
catalogue which were observed repeatedly (both in the ROSAT/WFC All Sky
Survey and/or during the pointed phase) were used to calibrate the temporal
change of the WFC efficiencies. From a simultaneous fit to all available
data points the degradation history of the effective areas for the S1 and
S2 filters has been reconstructed and compared to the values from the most
recent WFC Master Calibration File (MCF-12) issued September 1993 by the
UK Data Centre. Details on the improved calibration may be found in the
above mentioned paper that can be found in the xuv_archive (access see email
header).
EXSAS - PATCH
=============
A patch for the EXSAS 95JAN version will be available in the next days.
