XCS - XMM-Newton Cluster Survey Catalog, DR1 Version

Overview

The XMM Cluster Survey (XCS) is a serendipitous search for galaxy clusters using all publicly available data in the XMM-Newton Science Archive. Its main aims are to measure cosmological parameters and trace the evolution of X-ray scaling relations. In their paper, the authors present the first data release from the XMM Cluster Survey (XCS-DR1). This consists of 503 optically confirmed, serendipitously detected, X-ray clusters. Of these clusters, 256 are new to the literature and 357 are new X-ray discoveries. They present 463 clusters with a redshift estimate (0.06 < z < 1.46), including 261 clusters with spectroscopic redshifts. The remainder have photometric redshifts. In addition, the authors have measured X-ray temperatures (kTX) for 401 clusters (0.4 < kTX < 14.7 keV).

Parameters

Name
The XMMXCS source designation based on the positional coordinates (RA and Dec in J2000 equatorial coordinates) of the XAPA-determined X-ray centroid, e.g. 'XMMXCS JHHMMSS.s+DDMMSS.s', where XAPA stands for XCS Automated Pipeline Algorithm.

Short_Name
The shorter version of the XMMXCS source designation using the truncated J2000 equatorial coordinates of the XAPA-determined X-ray centroid, e.g. 'XMMXCS JHHMM.m+DDMM'.

RA
The Right Ascension of the XAPA-determined X-ray centroid of the source in the selected equinox.

Dec
The Declination of the XAPA-determined X-ray centroid of the source in the selected equinox.

LII
The Galactic Longitude of the XAPA-determined X-ray centroid of the source in the selected equinox.

BII
The Galactic Latitude of the XAPA-determined X-ray centroid of the source in the selected equinox.

Counts
The number of counts for the source in the 0.5 - 2.0 keV band, viz., the background-subtracted 0.5 - 2.0 keV photon counts as determined by XAPA. As explained in Lloyd-Davies et al. (2011, MNRAS, 418, 14), these count values have not been corrected for photons falling outside the XAPA-defined aperture (that is done during an additional spatial-fitting step once the cluster redshifts are known). The count values pertain to the number of photons gathered from a single ObsID, where 'ObsID' is used herein to refer to each of the complex sets of XMM exposures and calibration files that comprise the 5776 XMM observations processed so far by XCS. If a candidate was detected in multiple ObsIDs, then the highest recorded count is used.

Redshift
The adopted cluster redshift (see Section 5.2 of the reference paper for a full discussion of how the most reliable redshifts were selected).

Ref_Redshift
The source of the redshift, as follows:

     Lit - from the literature (see Section 5.3 of the reference paper),
     NXS - photometric redshift from the NXS (NOAO-XMM cluster Survey) project,
     Dr7 - photometric redshift from SDSS DR7,
     S82 - photometric redshift from SDSS Stripe 82 field,
     LRG - spectroscopic redshift from SDSS follow-up of Luminous Red Galaxies,
    Spec - spectroscopic redshift from the present study,
     H11 - redshift from Harrison et al. (2012, arXiv preprint 1202.4450.
  

Redshift_Type
The method by which the redshift was determined:

    spec - spectroscopy
    phot - photometry
   X-ray - X-ray spectroscopy
  

kT
The measured X-ray temperature for the cluster, in keV. The temperature fits are redshift-dependent and those presented herein assume that the redshift value listed is correct.

kT_Neg_Err
The 1-sigma lower error in the X-ray temperature, in keV.

kT_Pos_Err
The 1-sigma upper error in the X-Ray temperature, in keV.

Alt_Name
The adopted alternative source designation taken from the literature (see Section 5.4 of the reference paper).

Best_Zoo
The best XCS-Zoo or other source for classification of the cluster:

     DR7 - SDSS DR7 regular imaging survey from XCS-Zoo (Sec. 4.1 of ref. paper)
     NXS - NXS imaging survey from XCS-Zoo (Sec. 4.1 of ref. paper)
     S82 - SDSS Stripe 82 imaging survey from XCS-Zoo (Sec. 4.1 of ref. paper)
     dss - Deep Sky Survey imaging (Section 4.2 of ref. paper)
  

Zoo_Class
The quality of the XCS-Zoo classification:

     g - gold
     s - silver
     b - bronze
    na - none available
  
The inspected candidates were classified into one of the following categories of cluster: gold; silver and bronze. A fourth category (other) was used for any remaining candidates (Section 4.1.1 of the reference paper). The XCS-Zoo categorization of each source was based upon the following information: a series of X-ray image cutouts (3 by 3, 6 by 6, 12 by 12 arcmin), highlighting X-ray contours and the region enclosed by the XAPA X-ray extent; a corresponding series of color-composite optical images (with and without X-ray contours overdrawn) and an image highlighting the location of the candidate within the ObsID. To be assigned a classification of gold, a candidate must have an unambiguous overdensity of galaxies coincident (i.e. within the extent of the XAPA-defined source ellipse) with an unambiguous extended X-ray source. Candidates classified as silver must have either an unambiguous overdensity of galaxies associated with an acceptable extended X-ray source, or an unambiguous extended X-ray source associated with a suspected galaxy overdensity and/or brightest cluster galaxy (BCG). Candidates classified as bronze were judged likely to be clusters, but could not be confirmed as such using only the information available in XCS-Zoo. Clusters not classified using XCS-Zoo were given a Zoo class value of 'na'.

L_Bol_500
The bolometric (0.05-100 keV band) luminosity of the cluster, in units of erg/s, within a radius of R500, the radius at which the overdensity has fallen to 500 times that of the cluster's critical density. Only clusters that have measured TX values have luminosity information (see Lloyd-Davies et al. 2011, MNRAS, 418, 14).

L_Bol_500_Neg_Err
The 1-sigma negative (lower) error in the corresponding parameter value.

L_Bol_500_Pos_Err
The 1-sigma positive (upper) error in the corresponding parameter value.

R_500
The radius R500 of the cluster, in kpc, viz., the radius at which the overdensity has fallen to 500 times that of the cluster's critical density.

R_500_Neg_Err
The 1-sigma negative (lower) error in the corresponding parameter value.

R_500_Pos_Err
The 1-sigma positive (upper) error in the corresponding parameter value.

L_Bol_200
