Overview

This database table is obsolete. Please refer to and use VERONCAT instead.

This database table contains the 9th edition of the Catalog of Quasars and Active Galactic Nuclei by Veron-Cetty and Veron, and is an update of the previous versions. It contains 13214 (+1856 more than the 8th edition published in 1998) quasars (defined as objects brighter than absolute B magnitude of -23), 4428 (+1094 more than the 8th edition) AGNs (defined as objects fainter than absolute B magnitude of -23), and 462 (+105 more than the 8th edition) BL Lac objects, that have been culled from 2054 (+191 more than the 8th edition) references. 55 objects once proposed but now rejected as quasars are NOT included in the online version of this catalog: their names and positions are listed in the Rejected_Quasars section of this help file.

Provenance

This online catalog was created by the HEASARC in May 2000 based on machine-readable tables obtained from the ADC/CDS data centers (their catalog VII/215: tables table1.dat, table2.dat, and table3.dat).

Parameters

Name
The most common name of the object.

RA
The Right Ascension of the object.

Dec
The Declination of the object.

LII
The galactic longitude of the object.

BII
The galactic latitude of the object.

BV_Color
The (B-V) color of the object, when known.

UB_Color
The (U-B) color of the object, when known.

Redshift
The redshift of the object.

Ref_Redshift
Numerical code of the reference for the redshift.

Flag_Redshift
This flag is set to E if the red-shift was estimated from a low-dispersion, slit-less spectrum, and is set to > if the quoted red-shift is a lower limit.

Flux_6_cm
The flux density at 6 cm (5 GHz) in milliJanskies (mJy).

Ref_Flux_6_cm
Numerical code of the reference for the 6 cm flux density.

Flux_11_cm
The flux density at 11 cm (2.7 GHz) in milliJanskies (mJy).

Ref_Flux_11_cm
Numerical code of the reference for the 11 cm flux density.

Abs_Mag
The absolute magnitude.

App_Mag
The apparent magnitude; the type of magnitude is specified by the parameter Flag_App_Mag, but is usually the visual magnitude.

Ref_App_Mag
Numerical code of the reference for the photometry.

Flag_App_Mag
This flag is V for a visual magnitude, P for a photographic magnitude, R for a red magnitude, and I for an I-band magnitude.

Table_Number
The number of the original input table. The table in the original catalog in which this object was listed:

      1 = Table 1.  Contains 13214 quasars.
(defined as objects brighter than absolute magnitude of -23)

      2 = Table 2.  Contains 462 confirmed, probable, or
          possible BL Lac objects.

      3 = Table 3.  Contains 4428 active galaxies.
(defined as objects fainter than absolute magnitude of -23)

Radio_Detect
This flag is "Y" if the object has been detected in the radio and "N" if it has not been detected in the radio.

Position_Flag
This flag is related to the accuracy and source for the quoted position:

O = optical position with an accuracy better than 1 arcsecond
R = radio position with an accuracy better than 1 arcsecond
      A =  approximate position

Ref_Chart
Numerical code of the reference for the finding chart.

Object_Type
A code describing the classification of the object:

       S1: Seyfert 1 spectrum
S1H: broad polarized Balmer lines detected
S1I: broad Paschen lines observed in the infrared
       S1N: narror-line Seyfert 1
       S1.0, S1.2, S1.5, S1.8, S1.9: intermediate Seyfert galaxies
       S2: Seyfert 2 spectrum
       S3: Seyfert 3 or liner
       S : unclassified Seyfert
       S?: possibly a Seyfert
       H2: nuclear HII region
       HP: high optical polarization (>3%)
       BL: confirmed BL Lac object
       Q : quasar
B?: probable or possible BL Lac object
AG: unspecified type of active galaxy

Default Object_Type values are set to the following for objects in tables 1, 2, and 3, if none were explicitly given in the originating table:

      Table 1 = Q : quasar
Table 2 = B?: probable or possible BL Lac object
Table 3 = AG: unspecified type of active galaxy

Class
BROWSE classification type. The classification is based on the Object_Type parameter.
